ARTIST SIMCHA EVEN-CHEN TXC&IAC ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCY IN JINGDEZHEN | 2025
During the residency, Simcha Even-Chen worked with both electric and gas kilns, observing how different firing environments influence collapse, translucency, and color behavior.
While structural outcomes remained unpredictable in both settings, the surface language shifted noticeably. In gas firing, jade porcelain revealed increased whiteness and translucency.
A significant development during the artist’s residency was a shift in her approach to surface. For the first time, Simcha Even-Chen worked extensively with brush-applied underglazes, opposite to spraying, allowing color to become more layered, tactile, and responsive to form.
