Biography
SIMCHA EVEN-CHEN

A contemporary ceramic artist based in Rehovot, Israel, Simcha Even-Chen has been active since 1996 and fully dedicated to her artistic practice since 2013. Her work has earned her an international reputation, with exhibitions across the globe and awards from leading ceramic competitions. Her sculptures are held in museum, gallery, and private collections worldwide, reflecting the broad recognition of her artistic voice. Since 2011 she has been a member of the International Ceramic Academy (IAC), and in recent years she has also served as a jury member in prestigious international ceramic competitions.

Even-Chen’s work explores the boundaries between form, space, and balance. Her earlier sculptures investigated tension and equilibrium—balancing the physical with the conceptual, and exploring the meeting point between the expected and the unexpected.

In recent years, her shift to porcelain has opened new possibilities. Rather than focusing on porcelain’s fragility or whiteness, she embraces its natural tendency to collapse at high temperatures, using this property as a creative force. The result is organic, amorphous forms that question ideas of void, motion, and transformation. Through bold color, pattern, and fluidity, she creates inter-spaces where form and collapse coexist.

Artist Statement

My sculptures explore the interplay between free three-dimensional forms and two-dimensional geometric patterns. Inspired by mathematical structures, I create a tension between rhythm and flow, where amorphic, ribbon-like shapes emerge and invite viewers to engage with their own imaginative interpretations.

Working with porcelain, I push the material to its physical limits, embracing its natural tendency toward collapse at high temperature. This process allows unexpected forms to appear, shapes that cannot be planned or predicted, but arises from a dialogue between control and chance.

Color is a central part in my work, connecting deeply with human emotion and psychology. Through bold hues and contrasting patterns, the sculptures reflect both our ways of acting and our ways of seeing the world.

In essence, my sculptures embody a balance between control and release, structure and freedom, interior and exterior expressed in porcelain, capturing the fragile, resilient states of being that define human experience.
